The other two, slight air and purging fire...
Sonnet 45The other two, slight air and purging fire,
Are both with thee, wherever I abide; The first my thought, the other my desire, These present-absent with swift motion slide. For when these quicker elements are gone In tender embassy of love to thee, My life, being made of four, with two alone Sinks down to death, oppress'd with melancholy; Until life's composition be recured By those swift messengers return'd from thee, Who even but now come back again, assured Of thy fair health, recounting it to me: This told, I joy; but then no longer glad, I send them back again and straight grow sad. [Continuing from the theme of the last sonnet]
The other two elements (components): skinny air and purifying fire, are always with you, irrespective of where I am. Air is my thought, and fire is my desire. These shuttle incessantly to and fro. Seeing as I’m made up of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water), when the nimble two of them (fire and air) are off on an errand to you, my whole being droops down in a depressive mood.
That is, until the two messenger elements come back from you: as they do as I write, telling me of your wellbeing. I’m delighted to hear this, but then immediately send those same elements back to you, and become grumpy again.
