Thy glass will show thee how thy beauties wear...
Sonnet 77Thy glass will show thee how thy beauties wear,
Thy dial how thy precious minutes waste; The vacant leaves thy mind's imprint will bear, And of this book this learning mayst thou taste. The wrinkles which thy glass will truly show Of mouthed graves will give thee memory; Thou by thy dial's shady stealth mayst know Time's thievish progress to eternity. Look, what thy memory can not contain Commit to these waste blanks, and thou shalt find Those children nursed, deliver'd from thy brain, To take a new acquaintance of thy mind. These offices, so oft as thou wilt look, Shall profit thee and much enrich thy book. |

(Probably given with a blank book as a gift)
You can tell how your looks are doing by glancing in the mirror and your watch can tell you how much time’s
been spent. These blank pages will bear the impressions of your mind.
When you see wrinkles in the mirror you can think of mortality, and when you see the clock ticking you can think of how quickly things pass. Anything you reckon you’ll forget, write down in here: you’ll find this progeny of your mind will grow within the pages and meet your future thoughts in the form of new-grown ones. This will both benefit you and make the book itself much more valuable.
